Liebfrauenkirche

Liebfrauenkirche is a Catholic church in Zürich featuring a Romanesque campanile tower and the structural layout of an early Christian basilica with three naves and clerestory windows. The building sits on an elevated terrace above the surrounding streets and displays a solid architectural presence in its location.

Construction began in 1893 following increased Catholic immigration to Zürich, which created the need for a second Catholic place of worship. This project reflected the community's growth during that period.

The interior displays artworks by Fritz Kunz featuring frescoes and mosaics, including a gold mosaic in the apse showing Christ with Mary and John the Baptist. These artistic elements shape how the space feels and create a distinctive visual experience for visitors.

The church is located approximately 430 meters from Zürich Main Station and opens daily from early morning, with extended hours on Tuesdays and Sundays until 9:00 PM. The elevated location requires a brief walk uphill, but access is straightforward from nearby streets.

The building sits on an elevated terrace above Leonhardstrasse and Weinbergstrasse, oriented toward the south due to the local topography. This placement gives the structure a distinctive prominence in its urban setting.
