Canton of Zürich

The Canton of Zurich is an administrative region in northeastern Switzerland comprising approximately 160 municipalities spread across thousands of square kilometers. The territory divides into several districts, with Zurich city serving as the administrative hub.

This territory joined the Swiss Confederation as an ally in 1351, establishing the foundation for future regional expansion. The acquisition of Winterthur from the Habsburgs in the 15th century significantly strengthened its power.

Residents speak Züritüütsch, an Alemannic dialect heard daily in markets, cafes, and on streets throughout the region. This local language connects the city of Zurich with smaller communities, creating a shared sense of belonging.

The region features an extensive transport network with the country's largest airport and major rail connections centered in Zurich. Moving between towns and villages is straightforward using trains and trams.

Nine prehistoric pile dwelling settlements from the Stone Age around Lake Zurich hold UNESCO World Heritage status. These archaeological sites reveal how people lived and built by the lake thousands of years ago.
