Letzigrund, Stadium in Zürich, Switzerland
Letzigrund is a stadium in the Altstetten district of Zürich, used for both football matches and athletics events. It has a covered stand, a running track around a grass pitch, and can hold around 25,000 people.
The stadium was built in 1925 by members of FC Zürich on what was then the edge of the city. It was completely rebuilt in 2007 to meet the standards required for UEFA Euro 2008, which gave it its current form.
The stadium is the long-standing home of Weltklasse Zürich, one of the top track and field meetings in the world, held every summer. On that evening, the stands fill with local families, sports fans and visitors who share the same energy around the track.
The stadium is easy to reach by tram, with a stop a short walk away in the Altstetten area. It is worth checking what event is on before you go, since entrance points and access routes can change depending on whether it is a football match or an athletics meeting.
In 1960, German sprinter Armin Hary ran 100 meters in exactly 10.0 seconds here, becoming the first person to have that time officially ratified. The record was doubted at first by some officials, who asked for it to be run again before they accepted it.
