Krematorium Sihlfeld D

Krematorium Sihlfeld D is a cremation and funeral service facility located within Zurich's Sihlfeld Cemetery, featuring a square-based ceremonial hall topped with a flat dome. Large windows provide natural light throughout the space, which accommodates approximately 290 people in the main hall.

This facility opened in 1915 and replaced Switzerland's first crematorium. After decades of active use, it was transformed into a funeral chapel in the 1990s and now functions as a columbarium within the cemetery grounds.

The interior walls display detailed sgraffito murals that reflect the craftsmanship of the early 1900s. The organ from 1914 anchors the space and creates a reflective environment for mourners.

Visits are formally guided, as the facility is reserved for funeral services and private ceremonies. Those interested in viewing the space should contact the cemetery administration in advance.

The organ was expanded in 1945 to include additional sound registers, making it a significant musical instrument within the funeral space. Though rarely played at modern services, it gives the room a distinctive acoustic quality.
