Herz Jesu Zürich-Wiedikon, Roman Catholic church in Wiedikon district, Zürich, Switzerland.
Herz Jesu Zürich-Wiedikon is a Roman Catholic church in the Wiedikon district with a basilica floor plan featuring a flat-roofed central nave and groin-vaulted side aisles in Romanesque Revival style. This underground structure was completed in 1969 and accommodates about 300 people with a granite altar and an organ installed in 1994.
Construction began in 1920 under architect Joseph Steiner and the building was consecrated in 1921. Formal dedication by Bishop Christian Caminada occurred in 1956, marking a gap between completion and official recognition.
The windows display scenes from Mary's life, inviting visitors to reflect on religious narratives. Wall paintings by Felix Baumhauer from the 1920s shape the interior and create a spiritual environment.
The underground church requires descending from street level and may present challenges for visitors with mobility issues. Guests should allow time to examine the details of the wall paintings and windows, as the compact size creates an intimate setting.
The church bells were dedicated in 1928 and cast from melted Dutch cannons, creating an unusual connection between military and religious history. This rare use of wartime material for sacred purposes reflects post-war resourcefulness.
