Lorraine Bridge

The Lorraine Bridge stretches 178 meters across the Aare River, featuring a main span of 82 meters and a width of 18 meters for vehicle lanes and sidewalks.

Construction of the bridge occurred between 1928 and 1930, replacing an iron structure known as the Red Bridge that previously managed pedestrian and non-rail traffic.

The bridge forms part of the cultural properties list in Bern's Breitenrain-Lorraine district, reflecting the engineering advancement of Swiss infrastructure in the 1930s.

The structure connects the main city area with the Lorraine quarter through multiple traffic lanes and pedestrian paths, facilitating daily movement across the Aare River.

During the late 1940s, construction work at the nearby Botanical Gardens caused four supports to fail, resulting in a partial collapse of the bridge structure.
