The Schaffhausen City Library operates in two sections: the main building at Münsterplatz contains historical collections, while Freihandbibliothek Agnesenschütte provides modern literature.
The library traces its origins to 1049 with the Benedictine monastery of Allerheiligen, which maintained a scriptorium and preserved 70 manuscripts from the 11th century.
The collection includes 160 medieval manuscripts, 260 early prints from before 1500, and numerous documents that reflect the regional heritage of Schaffhausen.
The library maintains extended hours throughout the week, opening Monday afternoons and Tuesday through Friday from morning until evening, with weekend access available.
The facility manages the Ministerialbibliothek, first documented in 1547, which holds theological texts from the Reformed clergy after the monastery dissolution.
