Volkshaus Bern, former people house and today's hotel in the city of Bern, Switzerland
Volkshaus Bern is a 1914 building with a solid classical facade marked by strong, simple lines. Inside, it contains large rooms like the Unionsaal, a restaurant called 7 Stuben, and various seminar spaces that it uses today as a boutique hotel.
The first Volkshaus was founded in 1893 as the first of its kind in Switzerland, but soon became a meeting point for workers and unions. The current building was completed in 1914 with modern concrete construction and was partly demolished in 1972, preserving only its artistic facade while a modern tower was built behind it.
The Volkshaus was originally a gathering place for workers and trade union members where social and political ideas were shared. The 1914 mural called "The Speaker" inside still reflects this tradition of assembly and discussion.
The location is easily accessible and centrally situated in Bern with large spaces suited to various activities. Visitors can use the restaurant, bar, or seminar rooms, and recent renovations between 2018 and 2020 have improved comfort and modern facilities.
Vladimir Lenin visited the building in 1915 while in exile in Switzerland and met with other socialist leaders there. This gathering was part of important discussions that later influenced world events.
