Museum Bärengasse

Museum Bärengasse comprises two connected four-story buildings called Schanzenhof and Zur Weltkugel dating from the 17th century, located in Zurich's old town. The ground and first floors house a young literature laboratory, while the upper levels serve educational programs.

The buildings were relocated approximately 65 meters from their original location on Talstrasse during the 1970s to protect them from urban development projects. From 1976 to 2008, they functioned as part of the Swiss National Museum, displaying exhibitions about residential culture.

The two historic 17th-century structures shape the cityscape and serve today as a venue for literary events and readings. Visitors experience firsthand how the old buildings function as a living space for contemporary cultural gatherings.

The visit allows access to literary events on the ground floor and exploration of the historic room layouts throughout the upper floors. It is worth allowing time to navigate the staircases and various spaces within both connected buildings.

The buildings were moved on rails as part of an innovative preservation effort, shifting their position while maintaining structural integrity. This relocation project was uncommon in Swiss conservation practices.
