Museum of Communication

The Museum of Communication in Bern holds objects and equipment that show how people have sent messages and stayed in contact over the past centuries. Inside, you find postal items, old telephones, radios, and other devices arranged to tell the story of how communication changed and grew.

The institution began in 1907 connected to the Swiss postal service and displayed materials about mail delivery. Over time it expanded to cover all forms of human communication, reflecting how technology transformed the way people connect.

The museum received the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2019 for its innovative approach to presenting communication history through interactive exhibitions.

The building is located in central Bern and is easy to reach by foot or public transport. Plan at least a few hours to explore the exhibits and experiment with the interactive installations throughout the floors.

The museum holds hundreds of thousands of photographs and millions of postage stamps documenting Swiss communication through the decades. These vast collections remain largely behind the scenes but occasionally appear in special displays that tell unexpected stories.
