Pfeffingen Castle, Castle ruin in Pfeffingen, Switzerland.
Pfeffingen Castle is a castle ruin set on a hilltop in the municipality of Pfeffingen, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland. Partial stone walls and foundations remain standing, outlining the layout of a medieval fortified structure.
The castle was built in the 12th century and served as a defensive structure in the Basel region for several centuries. It changed hands multiple times before being abandoned in the 18th century, after which it gradually fell into ruin.
The ruin sits on a wooded hill and is today a popular destination for walkers from the region. On weekends, families and hikers come to explore the remains and enjoy the view over the surrounding countryside.
The ruin is reached by marked hiking trails and there is no admission fee. The path climbs uphill and the ground among the ruins is uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The 1356 Basel earthquake is one of the strongest ever recorded in central Europe, and this castle was among the structures it damaged. The marks left by that event can still be read in the surviving sections of wall.
