Fri-Son, Performance hall in Fribourg, Switzerland
Fri-Son is a concert venue at Route de la Fonderie 13 in Fribourg, run by a bilingual non-profit association. Its main hall holds up to 1,200 standing spectators, making it the largest concert hall in the canton, and a smaller hall called "Bobine" holds up to 300. The building is a former foundry, and the association's members bought and renovated it through the cooperative Fonderie 13.
Fri-Son emerged in 1983 from a lack of self-managed cultural spaces, as a critical reaction to the official festivities for the 500th anniversary of Fribourg's entry into the Confederation. First housed in the former Hôpital des Bourgeois, it moved in 1985 to an industrial hall at Rue de l'Industrie 25, then in 1987 to the former Fonderie 13 factory. In summer 1999, members formed the cooperative Fonderie 13, which bought and renovated the building and has rented it to the Fri-Son association since.
The name is a pun: Fri for Fribourg and Son, French for sound, echoing frisson (shiver). The club is run by a bilingual non-profit association whose committee is elected by the members' assembly. Besides concerts, it has hosted film screenings, table-tennis tournaments and flea markets.
