Hermitage Longeborgne

Hermitage Longeborgne is a religious community situated on a rocky cliff overlooking the Rhone Valley, comprising several chapels and living spaces. The structures are partially carved into the mountainside and built into the natural rock formations.

The hermitage was founded in 1522 and initially housed a community of Franciscan friars. Later, individual hermits settled here and maintained the spiritual practices that made the place significant.

The hermitage holds a significant collection of votive offerings left by pilgrims over centuries. These objects reveal how visitors expressed their gratitude and spiritual concerns at this mountain sanctuary.

The site is reached by foot along a mountain path, and steep passages require sturdy footwear. It is advisable to arrive early and allow plenty of time to comfortably complete the climb.

The walls contain preserved inscriptions from 1542 carved by early visitors. These markings offer insights into the long history of pilgrimages to this location.
