St. Peter and Paul Church, Catholic church on Ufenau Island, Switzerland
St. Peter and Paul is a church on Ufenau Island built in Romanesque style. The building shows a simple single-nave layout with a chancel tower, a traditional gabled roof, and round-arched double windows that illuminate the interior.
The church was built in 1141 and rests on foundations from a 10th-century predecessor. A Roman temple from the 1st century originally stood at this location.
The church holds Gothic wooden sculptures of apostolic figures and wall paintings showing scenes of martyrdom. These artworks from various periods shape the visual character of the interior space.
Visitors reach the church by ferry to Ufenau Island from Pfäffikon, with regular daytime service throughout the year. The ferry crossing itself is an essential part of the experience and allows time to enjoy the surrounding water landscape.
The entrance portal contains a 10th-century door lintel with original carved details, a reminder of the site's deep past. Inside, the gravestone of German reformer Ulrich von Hutten from 1523 is also preserved here.
