Alta via della Verzasca, Mountain trail in Ticino, Switzerland
The Alta via della Verzasca is a mountain trail that extends roughly 57 kilometers through varied terrain, connecting ridges and steep slopes. The path traverses different elevations and landscapes ranging from forested valleys to rocky summits.
The trail originated from ancient paths used by local inhabitants for trade and communication between valleys. These historic routes show how people have crossed the region for centuries to stay connected with different communities.
Mountain huts along the route preserve alpine traditions by serving regional dishes and providing basic accommodations run by local mountain communities. Visitors meet people who have lived in this region for generations and share their way of life with guests.
The full route takes four to five days to walk, and several mountain huts offer overnight stays, meals, and water stations. Good footwear and preparation are important because the trail is technically demanding and supply is not continuous.
The trail is equipped with iron holds to make particularly steep and technical sections safer. These special fixtures help hikers navigate tricky passages that would be difficult to cross otherwise.
