Nydegg, Medieval castle ruins in Mattequartier, Switzerland.
Nydegg is a medieval castle ruin in Bern containing the remains of a fortified complex from the Middle Ages. The structure originally had a central tower with four corner towers forming the defensive layout.
The castle was founded in 1190 and served as a ducal residence until its destruction between 1268 and 1270 by Bern citizens. This collapse marked a turning point in the city's political development.
The Nydegg area once served as a working district where craftspeople and traders set up their workshops near the river channels. Today the ruins stand as a reminder of this former commercial hub.
The site is reached through Nydeggstalden street, which links Gerechtigkeitsgasse to the river and bridge area. Walking through from the upper part of town gives the best view of all the remains.
Archaeological digs in the 1950s and 1960s uncovered the original castle well that still sits at the location today. This well provides a direct connection to daily life in medieval times.
