Theodorskirche

Theodorskirche is a Gothic church in Kleinbasel featuring twin towers on its western facade, with the northern tower rising taller than the southern one. The building displays typical Gothic architecture with pointed roof lines and remains in use today by a Protestant Reformed congregation.

The building was first documented around 1100 when Bishop Burkard von Fenis transferred its ownership to the monastery of St. Alban in Grossbasel. Beneath the church lie foundations dating to the 8th century, revealing that a religious structure existed on this site centuries before the current Gothic building was constructed.

The church serves as a gathering point in the Kleinbasel neighborhood, where residents continue to use the space for community gatherings and local events. Its presence shapes the character of this older district and remains woven into the fabric of daily life here.

Archaeological digs between 1984 and 1993 uncovered multiple graves from the 11th century beneath the church floor. These findings reveal that the grounds served as a burial site for local residents over many generations.
