Leuk Castle, Medieval castle in Leuk, Switzerland
Leuk Castle is a fortified complex in Valais featuring a square main tower, two residential buildings, and an irregular surrounding wall. The structures are built from stone and form a compact group in the center of the town.
In the early 13th century, the Bishop of Sion acquired the fief and transformed the small fort into a larger administrative center. The complex remained a seat of local authority for centuries afterward.
The castle served as a seat of power for centuries and remains a symbol of Valais history today. Visitors can see the stone walls and old rooms that show how people once lived and governed here.
The castle is located in the center of Leuk Stadt near Rathausplatz and is easily accessible from the town center. The site sits on the road connecting the Rhone valley with the Gemmi Pass route.
A modern glass cupola was added in 1999 by architect Mario Botta atop one of the medieval towers. This addition blends the old structure with contemporary design and creates an unexpected contrast.
