Beauregard Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Chippis, Switzerland
Beauregard Castle stands as a ruin on a rocky outcrop at the entrance to Val d'Anniviers, positioned to command views of the surrounding valley. The remains reveal a structure that once combined living quarters with defensive walls arranged across the hilltop.
The castle was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and served the Raron family until 1417, when local rebels burned it during regional unrest. That fire marked the end of its occupation.
The castle site retains class B Swiss cultural property status and represents regional architectural traditions through its defensive structures and living quarters.
The site is accessible from Niouc via a marked walking trail, and information panels with QR codes provide audio guide access. The exposed hilltop setting means weather can change quickly, so appropriate footwear and clothing are advisable.
Archaeological digs between 2008 and 2011 uncovered a circular water cistern and remnants of a spiral staircase inside the castle. These discoveries reveal details about how the fortress operated in medieval times.
