Via Suworow, Historic hiking trail between Airolo and Ilanz, Switzerland
The Via Suworow is a mountain hiking trail connecting Airolo and Ilanz through alpine passes and valley regions. The route follows multiple segments across varying elevations where the landscape shifts from steep ridges to open meadows.
In 1799, Russian General Alexander Suworow led his troops across these Alpine passes while retreating from French forces during wartime conflict. The trail takes its name from this significant military campaign that unfolded under harsh mountain conditions.
The trail winds through small mountain villages where traditional stone buildings and historic bridges shape the landscape. Local people continue to use these passages much as their ancestors did for centuries.
The hike breaks into daily segments, with each stage typically requiring 4 to 6 hours of walking time. Lodges and mountain accommodations are scattered along the route to provide rest and meals for trekkers.
At the Devil's Bridge location, weathered markers document the path that Suworow's troops took during their mountain crossing. Visitors can see traces of the route the soldiers had to navigate through particularly treacherous terrain.
