Opening in 1870, the hotel initially faced challenges during the Franco-Prussian War before flourishing under the management of Max Alphons Pfyffer from 1871.

The property earned recognition as a Class A Swiss cultural monument, representing the architectural developments of Lucerne's 19th-century tourism expansion.

César Ritz managed the property in the late 1870s, bringing in chef Auguste Escoffier to establish the hotel's gastronomic standards.
