Alpineum

Alpineum is an art museum in Lucerne showcasing large-scale panoramic paintings of Swiss mountain landscapes. The collection spans over five hundred square meters of canvas and features detailed renderings of famous Alpine peaks.

The building was acquired in 1885 by painter Ernst Hodel senior, who transformed it from a former monument museum into a permanent exhibition space for Alpine paintings. This conversion marked the start of an institution dedicated to mountain landscape art.

The museum displays works depicting Swiss mountain ranges and shapes how visitors understand the local Alpine culture. These paintings allow guests to experience directly how central these landscapes are to regional identity.

The museum sits near the Lion Monument and is easily accessible on foot from the city center. Visitors should note that opening hours vary by season and should check ahead before planning a visit.

One of the most fascinating exhibits is an extensive collection of stereoscopic photographs from around 1900. These images reveal how photographers at the turn of the 20th century explored new techniques to capture and convey spatial depth.
