Cimetière de Montoie, Cemetery in Lausanne, Switzerland
Cimetière de Montoie is a cemetery in Lausanne, Switzerland, located on a hillside and arranged in tiers connected by elliptical paths. It covers a large area with curved walkways, circular columbariums, and a garden of remembrance, and it is reserved for the burial of ashes.
The cemetery opened in 1972 on the site of an older burial ground, with design by landscape architect A.-F. Desarzens and buildings by Frédéric Brugger. Some monuments from the former cemetery were kept and placed near the entrance.
The layout of the cemetery follows the shape of the hill, and the circular columbariums and the garden of remembrance give it a character that feels more like a park than a traditional burial ground. People often walk here among the trees and lawns, and the place is used for quiet remembrance.
The cemetery is open every day, with longer hours from April to September and shorter hours from October to March. Visitors can enter from Chemin du Capelard and follow the curved paths that lead through the different levels.
The cemetery is exclusively for ashes, while bodies are buried at the Bois-de-Vaux cemetery nearby. Since 2010, the gardeners have stopped using synthetic chemicals and maintain the grounds with more environmentally friendly methods.
