Ruine Göskon, Medieval castle ruin in Obergösgen, Switzerland
Ruine Göskon is a medieval castle built on a peninsula above the Aare River between Obergösgen and Niedergösgen. Visitors can still see sections of stone walls, defensive ditches, and a water storage tank on the site.
The site began as a fortified refuge during the Iron Age and was later developed into a castle. In the 13th century, the local lords moved away and built a new stronghold elsewhere.
The site was long the seat of the Göskon family, whose name still marks the ruins today. It shows how important such elevated positions were for local rulers of the time.
The site is freely accessible and sits right beside the Aare River with good views across the water. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and paths down toward the river can be quite steep.
Excavations in the 1980s uncovered Bronze Age and Roman objects, showing that people lived here far earlier than the castle period. These discoveries prove the location held importance for thousands of years.
