Mauensee Château

Mauensee Château sits on a small island in Lake Mauensee, connected to the mainland by a bridge at 504 meters elevation. The three-story structure forms a distinctive landmark in the landscape.

The first records of the castle date from 1184 when it appeared in the Engelberg Monastery inventory as a defensive structure. It served as an important point of control for the region during medieval times.

The château displays Renaissance architectural elements with its limestone door from 1700 and Gothic-style windows. These features shape how the building looks across its three stories.

The château remains private property of the Sigg family since 1998 and cannot be visited inside, but hiking paths around the lake offer views of it. Visitors should explore the trails to fully understand the island's setting.

A small chapel sits in the northeast corner of the structure, connected by a wooden bridge to a separate tower that once contained latrines. This combination shows how the inhabitants organized daily necessities alongside religious space.
