St. Johannes, Catholic church in Lucerne, Switzerland

St. Johannes is a Catholic church on Schädrütistrasse in the Würzenbach quarter of Lucerne, built of exposed concrete to plans by Walter Maria Förderer. The sculptural building, consecrated in 1970, is the youngest parish in the city. Inside, Förderer shaped a grotto-like hollow space with a raised altar area, meditation niches, a bronze cross and a niche with sound bars.

After years of makeshift chapels, the Catholic parish of Lucerne held a competition in 1967 for a neighbourhood centre, won by Walter Maria Förderer. The church was built that year and consecrated three years later. Renovations in 2001 added artistic elements. It is the youngest parish in the city of Lucerne.
