Uri, Historic paddle steamer in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Uri is a paddle steamer on Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, about 62 meters long, built from steel and wood. The vessel has several decks with seating and dining areas and is still powered by its original steam boilers.
Uri was built in 1901 and is the oldest paddle steamer still in service on Lake Lucerne. The vessel went through several overhauls over the decades, but its original propulsion system was kept in place.
The Uri takes its name from the canton at the southern end of the lake, linking the vessel directly to the region it serves. On board, the pace of travel feels closer to an era when a lake crossing was a social occasion rather than just a commute.
The boat runs year-round, with indoor decks providing cover during bad weather and open decks available when conditions allow. Since all levels are reached by stairs, access for people with limited mobility is limited.
On board, the steam engine can be watched through a glass panel while the vessel is moving, something that has become rare on passenger ships in Europe. The visible pistons and connecting rods give a direct view of the mechanics that drive the boat.
