Schauenburg, Medieval castle ruins in Selzach, Switzerland
Schauenburg is a ruined medieval castle located on a rocky ridge southwest of Selzach in the Canton of Solothurn. The site preserves wall fragments, a tower, and the foundations of a defensive ring wall structure.
The castle was built in the 12th century and served as a clearing fortress in the region. It was abandoned before 1300 and gradually deteriorated afterward.
The ruins represent a typical example of medieval Swiss defensive architecture, demonstrating the construction methods used for mountain fortifications.
The ruins can be reached via local trails from Selzach and parking is available for visitors driving by car. The hilltop location involves some climbing effort to reach the site.
The location at nearly 1200 meters elevation makes the site a vantage point overlooking the Solothurn landscape. From here one can see far across the surrounding region and understand the terrain that shaped this fortress.
