Cameroonian Highlands forests, Montane tropical forest in Cameroon and Nigeria
The Cameroonian Highlands forests are montane tropical woodlands spread across mountains in eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon, with peaks reaching 2,600 meters. The terrain shows steep slopes covered in thick vegetation that stays green year-round.
These forests have lost over half their mountain coverage above 1,800 meters since the 1960s due to farming expansion. Agricultural and settlement pressures transformed much of the original terrain.
Local communities near Mount Oku participate in forest conservation projects, managing resources while protecting the remaining natural areas since 1986.
The region receives annual rainfall between 1,800 and 4,000 millimeters (71 to 157 inches), with altitude keeping temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). Visitors should prepare for wet conditions and cool weather, especially at higher elevations.
These montane woodlands hold several bird species found nowhere else in the world, plus rare small mammals adapted only to this region. These animals depend on the cool, wet forest habitat that keeps them thriving at high altitude.
