Oku Volcanic Field

Oku Volcanic Field is an expansive volcanogenic landscape in Cameroon's Western High Plateau featuring multiple stratovolcanoes with steep slopes reaching 3,011 meters. The region displays characteristic layered volcanic formations and varied topography formed over millions of years.

Volcanic activity in this region began roughly 24 to 22 million years ago and continues to shape the landscape today. Multiple eruption phases and cooling periods created the current mountain structure over deep geological time.

Local communities have lived alongside these volcanic slopes for generations, incorporating the landscape into their way of life and local customs. The terrain shapes how people farm, build, and move through their surroundings daily.

Two crater lakes within this field, Nyos and Monoun, hold subterranean carbon dioxide reserves that slowly escape through volcanic pipes. This natural gas accumulation makes these lakes geological phenomena found rarely anywhere else in the world.
