Donglin Temple

Donglin Temple is a Buddhist complex in Shanghai featuring multiple ceremonial halls and a large central statue of the goddess Guanyin. The grounds are accessed through three parallel bridges leading to the main gate, and offer different areas to explore.

The complex was founded in 1308 during the Yuan Dynasty and has experienced significant changes since then. After fires, wars, and various damages, a major restoration modernized the temple's appearance.

The temple is dedicated to Guanyin, the goddess of compassion, and visitors bring coins to eight copper fish statues to express their wishes. This practice shows how people use the place today to voice their hopes and prayers through small gestures.

The temple is located in a quiet area and is easy to reach for visitors who prefer walking or public transport. It is best to explore the grounds during daylight hours when all areas are lit and accessible.

The main hall has an unusual exterior design that resembles a natural red cliff face and stands out from traditional temple architecture. This distinctive appearance creates a visual impact that often surprises visitors on first sight.
