Macau International Airport, International airport in São Francisco Xavier, Macau SAR.
Macau International Airport sits on reclaimed ground between Taipa and Coloane islands and offers a passenger terminal with facilities for international aviation. The runway stretches parallel to the coastline, while the terminal connects to boarding areas through bridges and corridors.
The facility opened for operations on November 9, 1995, after Portuguese President Mário Soares presided over the official inauguration on December 8. Construction on the reclaimed land required several years of planning and land reclamation before the opening.
The name refers to the old parish of São Francisco Xavier that once covered this stretch of coastline. The arrival hall displays Portuguese and Chinese characters side by side, while travelers between gates find traditional tea houses alongside modern cafés.
The terminals offer shops, restaurants, currency exchange counters, and lounges for waiting passengers. Signage remains bilingual throughout, and most service areas are located near the security checkpoint.
The runway operates around the clock without night restrictions, allowing the airport to handle flights at any hour. The tarmac can accommodate large cargo aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Antonov 124, making the site an important point for freight transport.
