Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, International airport in Changning District, China
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is an aerodrome with two terminals west of the city center in Changning and Minhang districts. The two buildings sit separated by an enclosed walkway, with platforms and escalators running between levels.
The facility began operations in 1907 and served as Shanghai's only aviation gateway for over nine decades. When Pudong opened in 1999, many long-haul routes moved there, refocusing Hongqiao on shorter distances.
The terminal displays large calligraphy artworks and red lanterns along corridors, features that stand out especially during Chinese holidays. Shops sell green tea, silk, and local snacks, making the transit area feel like a small marketplace.
Metro lines connect the terminals to the railway station and downtown, trains running about every ten minutes during peak hours. Signage appears in Chinese and English, walkways leading directly to platforms without outdoor detours.
China Eastern operates its headquarters directly within the terminal complex, allowing passengers to see office towers from departure gates. This proximity shortens response times during schedule changes or ground issues.
