Xi'an Xianyang International Airport, International airport in Dizhang Subdistrict, China.
Xi'an Xianyang International Airport sits roughly 47 kilometers (29 miles) northwest of downtown Xi'an in Shaanxi Province. Three separate buildings spread across the site, with each terminal designed for different flight connections and offering modern facilities for millions of passengers annually.
Planning for the project started in the early 1980s as Chinese civil aviation expanded and Xi'an needed a modern airport. The opening followed in September 1991, replacing the older Xiguan Airport closer to the city.
The design integrates Tang Dynasty elements into its architecture, recalling the golden age of Xi'an and immersing travelers in this history from the moment they arrive. The name connects both cities, with Xianyang being the former capital of the Qin Dynasty and now merged with Xi'an.
Arriving travelers should allow enough time for security checks and passport control, as queues can take longer depending on the time of day. Signage is available in Chinese and English, which helps with orientation between terminals and arrival areas.
An underground passage connects the oldest terminal with the newer building, allowing transfer without another security check. The region around the airport was historically part of the Wei Valley, through which Silk Road merchants traveled and brought their goods westward.
