Gulangyu, Car-free island near Xiamen, China
This island spans 2 square kilometers off the coast of Xiamen, featuring Victorian architecture, sandy beaches, and tree-lined streets without motorized vehicles.
In 1842, following the Treaty of Nanking, Gulangyu emerged as an international settlement, hosting residents from thirteen nations who constructed colonial buildings.
The island maintains over 200 pianos and holds China's sole piano museum, earning its designation as Piano Island within the musical community.
Ferries depart every 20 minutes from Xiamen International Cruise Terminal, with a daily visitor limit of 30,000 people to maintain the environment.
The island houses 20,000 residents who preserve their heritage through the Hokkien dialect and Victorian-era structures from the colonial period.
