Gulangyu

Gulangyu is a small island off the coast of Xiamen that stands out for its car-free streets and well-maintained colonial-era buildings. Wide paths wind between historic villas, past mature trees, and down to sandy beaches along the waterfront.

Access to the island is by ferry from the mainland, which operates regularly throughout the day, and walking is the main way to get around. The island manages daily visitor numbers to prevent overcrowding and preserve conditions.

Residents speak a local dialect that differs from other parts of China and survives here in active daily use. This spoken language is a key part of the community's identity and is maintained across generations.
