Beijing Daxing International Airport, International airport in Lixian, China
Beijing Daxing International Airport is an international airport in Lixian, China, where the main building takes the form of a six-armed starfish. The entire facility connects check-in, baggage handling and waiting areas beneath a continuous roof made of steel and glass.
The facility opened in September 2019, entering service shortly before the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China. The location south of the capital was meant to relieve the older airport system and create new capacity.
The building is called Phoenix and presents itself to visitors through a six-pointed star shape, with arms extending outward from the center. This layout allows travelers to reach gates within short walking distances while moving beneath large glass roofs.
Travelers arrive on the ground floor, while check-in and security screening take place on the levels above. The layout of the halls allows visitors to orient themselves around the open central space and walk from there to the individual gates.
The central space receives its daylight through eight round openings in the roof, which spread like eyes or windows above the departure areas. This design reduces the need for artificial lighting during the day and creates a changing play of light on the floor.
