Dafosi Grottoes, Archaeological site in Daguan village, Binzhou, China.

Dafosi is an archaeological site with cave temples carved into cliffsides containing Buddhist sculptures and carvings across multiple interconnected chambers. The complex sits in Daguan village near Binzhou and features natural rock formations that were modified and decorated during different periods.

The site developed gradually over many centuries as Buddhist communities systematically carved and decorated the rock face. In 2014 it gained UNESCO World Heritage recognition as part of the Silk Roads network for its importance in showing ancient trade connections and cultural exchange.

Inside these caves, visitors see numerous Buddhist artworks and inscriptions that show how people expressed their faith through stone over many centuries. These artistic works reveal religious beliefs and spiritual practices that were central to the lives of those who created and worshipped here.

The site can be explored on foot as the various caves and chambers are connected and visitors can move between them fairly easily. It is best to wear comfortable shoes since the ground can be uneven in places and there are stairs to navigate in some sections.

Different cave chambers show varying carving techniques that reveal how Buddhist artistry refined and changed over time as tools and methods improved. Some rooms display rough cutting marks while others show finer details and greater artistic care in their execution.
