Guanling Mausoleum, Archaeological cemetery at Dangyang, China
Guanling Mausoleum is an archaeological burial site in Dangyang, recognized as a nationally protected historical monument, marking the resting place of General Guan Yu from the Three Kingdoms period. The complex includes a burial mound, temple buildings, and a walled enclosure laid out according to the principles of an imperial tomb complex.
The mausoleum was established shortly after the death of General Guan Yu in the early 3rd century, when his remains were buried at this location in Dangyang. Over the following centuries, successive dynasties recognized the site and expanded the temple buildings, turning it into one of the most venerated memorial sites in China.
The mausoleum is one of the main sites where General Guan Yu is venerated, a figure worshipped in Chinese folk religion as a god of war and righteousness. Visitors can see incense and offerings left by worshippers in the temple areas, showing that the place is still actively used for devotion today.
The site is located north of Dangyang city and can be reached on foot or by car without difficulty. A morning visit tends to be quieter, making it easier to walk through both the temple and burial areas at a comfortable pace.
The tomb is said to hold only the body of the general without his head, which was sent elsewhere after his execution. This is why there are two separate mausoleums dedicated to him in different parts of China, each claiming to hold part of his remains.
