Tiger Leaping Gorge, Canyon in Yunnan Province, China

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a canyon between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, where the Jinsha River has carved a deep gap of about 3,800 meters (12,500 feet). The valley stretches 15 kilometers with two routes on either side: a higher trail along the upper slopes and a lower road that runs closer to the river.

The name comes from an old story about a tiger that escaped hunters by jumping across the river at its narrowest point, where the water spans only about 25 meters. This legend is deeply rooted in local history and explains why this deep gorge carries such an unusual name.

The Naxi people live in traditional settlements scattered through the gorge, and you will see them working in fields and managing simple guesthouses along the trails. Their daily routines shape the rhythm of life in this deep valley.

Two main hiking routes offer different experiences: the higher trail provides longer walks with expanded views, while the lower route allows shorter sections and direct views of the river. Guesthouses are spread along both paths, so you can plan your stay at your own pace without needing to rush.

This gorge is part of a protected region where three major rivers flow in parallel and together have carved one of the world's deepest river canyons. This rare geological formation shows how water has shaped the landscape over millions of years.
