Wolong National Nature Reserve

Wolong is a protected area in the Qionglai Mountains that spans multiple elevation zones, creating distinct forest and meadow regions across the territory. The landscape transitions from dense subtropical woodlands to open high-altitude grasslands, with bamboo formations appearing throughout the middle elevations.

Protection of the area began in 1963 with a modest size, but recognition of its ecological value led to major expansion within a decade. This growth marked a shift in how China approached wildlife conservation on a larger scale.
