Wolong National Nature Reserve

The reserve spans 200,000 hectares across the Qionglai Mountains, featuring sub-tropical forests, alpine meadows, and extensive bamboo groves at elevations between 1,200 and 6,250 meters.

The Chinese government established Wolong in 1963 as a protected area measuring 20,000 hectares, which expanded tenfold by 1975 to enhance wildlife conservation efforts.

The reserve integrates scientific research with traditional ecological practices of Tibetan and Qiang communities who maintain long-standing connections to the mountainous landscape.

Visitors need to verify current access conditions and obtain necessary permits, as entry regulations change based on weather, research activities, and animal protection protocols.

The reserve houses 150 wild giant pandas and operates the China Conservation and Research Center, which develops breeding programs for endangered species.
