Jichang Garden, Protected Chinese garden in Xihui Park, Wuxi, China.

Description

Jichang Garden is a Chinese garden at the eastern base of Huishan Mountain, spanning approximately 2.5 acres and combining traditional features such as rockeries, water pools, and wooden structures. The layout follows an elongated form that allows visitors to discover different spaces and views in sequence.

History

The garden was founded between 1506 and 1530 by descendants of poet Qin Guan and was originally called Fenggu Mountain Villa. A significant transformation took place in 1591 that gave the site its present name.

Culture

The garden is divided into two main areas: the western section displays yellowish-brown rock formations, while the eastern part centers on the Jinhui Rippling Pool. This layout reflects traditional design principles that visitors experience while walking through.

Practical

The garden is accessible daily within Xihui Park and can be explored on foot, with pathways between different areas easy to navigate. The best time to visit is between March and June or September through October, when the weather is pleasant.

Did you know?

Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong visited the garden multiple times and left poems that are still preserved in architectural elements today. These imperial verses testify to the site's historical importance across several centuries.
