Bayan Mandahu Formation, Geological formation in Inner Mongolia, China.

The Bayan Mandahu Formation is a geological layer made up of red sandstone and sediment deposits that spreads across sections of the Gobi Desert. This complex contains multiple rock layers from different time periods that record the history of the land and its past environments.

Paleontologists discovered this formation in the early 20th century and recognized its importance as a Late Cretaceous site from 75 to 71 million years ago. This discovery opened new understanding about the animals and environments of that distant period.

Scientists and researchers from around the world come here to study dinosaur evolution and ancient life, turning this location into an important international research hub. The ongoing work at this site attracts paleontologists and students who want to understand how different species developed millions of years ago.

This site is located in a remote area and requires special permits and appropriate transportation to visit. Temperatures change significantly depending on the season, so preparing for the weather conditions is important before going.

Complete skeletons of Machairasaurus leptonychus were found here preserved in life-like positions from rapid sand burial. This process protected the fossils from damage and kept them in their natural state, making them valuable for study.
