Bayan Mandahu Formation

The Bayan Mandahu Formation is a geological layer made up of red sandstone and sediment deposits that spreads across sections of the Gobi Desert. This complex contains multiple rock layers from different time periods that record the history of the land and its past environments.

Complete skeletons of Machairasaurus leptonychus were found here preserved in life-like positions from rapid sand burial. This process protected the fossils from damage and kept them in their natural state, making them valuable for study.
