Nanchao Formation, Geological formation in Lingbao County, Henan Province, China
The Nanchao Formation is a geological sequence in Lingbao County, Henan Province, composed of distinct rock layers stacked one above another. The beds display reddish sandy clay and natural conglomerate deposits that are visible in their characteristic color and texture.
This rock sequence formed roughly 85 to 75 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, when the landscape and climate of this region underwent significant change. Researchers later recognized that the layers preserved important clues about the animal life of that ancient time.
The formation takes its name from the nearby Nanchao village, linking this geological site to the local landscape and community identity. This naming reflects how natural features are often connected to the settlements around them.
The formation can be explored near the locality of Chuankou in Lingbao County, where the rock layers are exposed at the surface. Visitors should wear comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear, as paths cross uneven terrain.
The layers contain surprisingly well-preserved dinosaur eggs and footprints that are valuable for paleontological study. These finds make the formation an important place to study how dinosaurs reproduced and behaved during the Cretaceous.
