Jincheng Erxian Temple, Temple complex in Zezhou County, China.
Erxian Temple in Zezhou County is a religious complex built following Chinese traditions, with multiple halls connected by courtyards and flanking structures. The layout features a front and rear hall system that organizes the space according to traditional principles of flow and hierarchy.
The temple was founded in the Northern Song to honour the two Yue sisters, local deities canonised as Chonghui and Chongshu under Emperor Huizong. A stele records a construction date of 1097, though other studies propose 1107 or the early twelfth century. Repairs continued through the Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing, leaving only the main hall as Song fabric. It was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 1996.
The temple honours the Two Immortals, sisters Chonghui and Chongshu of the Yue family, who according to local belief were mistreated by their stepmother yet served her dutifully and became immortals. In the Northern Song, Emperor Huizong granted them the titles Chonghui and Chongshu zhenren and the temple name Zhenze, and the shrine was built under official encouragement. The gilded crowned statues inside the main hall represent the sisters.
The temple faces south on a north–south axis, entered through the mountain gate and passed via the overhall and offering hall to the main hall; the whole compound measures about 83 m long and 29 m wide. The main hall is small and dimly lit, so bring a torch to read the miniature bracket sets of the tiankong louge and the faces of the 16 painted clay figures.
The miniature heaven-palace cabinet inside the main hall is not a scaled-down copy of the hall's own bracket sets: its brackets are more complex, using seven-ply and diagonal forms, and a wooden rainbow bridge with galleries links the side towers. A 2017 Tsinghua study dated the cabinet to about 1140–1165, slightly after the hall and its statues.
