Changling Mausoleum, Imperial burial complex in Shisanling, China
Changling Mausoleum is an imperial burial complex in Shisanling with three courtyards surrounded by stone walls. Its Hall of Eminent Favor contains massive wooden columns crafted from rare timber.
Construction of the complex began in the late 14th century and took many years to complete this vast imperial burial site. The project represented a major undertaking of the early Ming Dynasty.
The Sacred Way features stone figures and animal statues lining the path, representing guardians and companions for the emperor's journey into the afterlife.
The complex is accessible for independent exploration without requiring a guided tour. Plan enough time to walk through all areas of the large grounds at your own pace.
Two ceremonial altars within the complex were used for burning silk and scrolls as offerings to honor the deceased emperor and his ancestors. These ritual sacrifices were central to the burial ceremonies.
