Kongtongshan National Park

Kongtongshan is a mountain system in Gansu featuring distinctive red sandstone peaks, deep gorges, and forested slopes. Pathways and cable cars connect different sections, allowing access to temples and viewing points throughout the terrain.

The mountain gained importance in ancient times as a sacred destination and served as a significant location along the Silk Road during the Qin and Han periods. Legends about visits by rulers seeking knowledge strengthened its reputation.

The mountain holds significance as a meeting place where different spiritual traditions find expression through its buildings and structures. Visitors walking through the site experience how Buddhism and Taoism coexist in the architecture and layout.

The best time to visit is between July and September when weather conditions are favorable for walking. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are recommended since sections of the trails involve steep terrain.

The rocks reveal some of China's oldest red stone layers, shaped by millions of years of erosion from water and wind. This geological foundation creates the striking visual character the landscape is known for.
