Humen Rail-Road Bridge, Combined railway and road bridge in Pearl River Delta, China.
The Humen Rail-Road Bridge is a cable-stayed structure spanning the Pearl River with dedicated levels for trains and vehicles. The design allows both transportation modes to operate independently on separate decks above the water.
Construction of this dual-purpose bridge began in 2006 and officially opened in December 2009, directly connecting the two cities for the first time. The project emerged from growing economic links between cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
The bridge serves as a physical connection between different communities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, supporting regional economic integration.
Regular trains and vehicles cross daily, connecting the urban areas of Guangzhou and Dongguan. Traffic is heavy during peak hours, so visitors planning a crossing should prepare for potential delays.
The structure supports around 200 trains daily alongside thousands of vehicles on the same bridge without interference. This engineering feat demonstrates how two entirely different transportation systems can coexist on a single crossing.
