Edinburgh Terrace is a protected housing estate in the 江苏路街道 area of Shanghai, listed as one of the city's outstanding historical buildings. The complex consists of brick row houses with plain facades, small windows, and narrow paths running between the buildings.
The complex was built in the early 20th century, originally intended for foreign residents settling in Shanghai during the concession era. Over the following decades its structure remained largely intact, and it was eventually granted protected status.
Edinburgh Terrace sits in a residential pocket where neighbors tend small gardens between buildings and spend time outdoors on the narrow paths. The street life here feels local and unhurried, with little sign of the tourist circuits nearby.
The area is best explored on foot at a slow pace, as the paths between buildings are narrow and the surroundings reward careful observation. Since it is an active residential neighborhood, visitors should keep noise low and respect residents' privacy.
