The Church of Saint Adalbert is a monumental single-nave Baroque church built in 1675–1681 on Dolní náměstí, modeled on Rome's Il Gesù. Its builders were Mikuláš and Jakub Brasch, replacing Gregor Bauer of Olomouc; the rector Tobiáš Gebler contributed to the design. Passable side chapels flank the nave, and a Marian column from 1675 stands in front.

A Gothic church dedicated to Saint George stood here before 1350; in 1625 the Jesuits received its administration. The present church was built in 1675–1681 on the model of Rome's Il Gesù, financed by a foundation set up in 1642. A 1734 decree declared its Marian image miraculous, and a wartime bomb destroyed most of the interior paintings.

The church's name changed from Saint George to Saint Adalbert after the Jesuits took over its administration in 1625. The Marian image donated by Jiří Štěpán Bruntálský z Vrbna was declared miraculous on 6 June 1734 by a commission under Cardinal Schrattenbach, and in the first half of the 18th century more than 4,000 masses were celebrated here each year. The church belongs to the Parish of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the Ostrava-Opava diocese.

The church stands on Dolní náměstí, its facade facing the Marian column of 1675 erected in front of it. The nave is flanked by side chapels that remain open to visitors, and the building is physically joined to the former Jesuit college, now the seat of the Zemský archiv v Opavě. The high altar came from the Capuchin church of Saint Joseph in Fulnek: it was dismantled in 1980 on the initiative of the heritage officer Dr. Dědková and the Opava dean František Vičar, restored in 1981–1982 by Prague restorers, and consecrated by Bishop Josef Vrana on 20 November 1982. Its inlay bears the date 1777, and a carved gilded cartouche by Zdeněk Preclík replaced the lost coat of arms of the lords of Vrbno.
