Nordstrand, municipality in North Frisia
Nordstrand is a coastal municipality in Nordfriesland on the North Sea with the status of a certified health resort. The town sits on historic island land, separated from the sea by a dike about 28 kilometers (17 miles) long and connected to the mainland via a 4-kilometer-long road.
The settlement developed on an island that was later connected to the mainland through dike construction. The area gained the health resort designation in 1990, transforming into a modern spa town while maintaining its deep maritime heritage.
The name Nordstrand reflects its position on the northern shore of what was once an independent island. Life here remains shaped by closeness to the sea, where people engage with tidal marshes through guided tours and outdoor exploration.
The town is accessible via a dike road from the mainland and offers about 2,400 beds in hotels, vacation homes, and guesthouses. On-site services include grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, doctors' offices, and two ATMs for daily needs.
The town features two harbors: the sailing port Süderhafen with over 60 boat slips and Strucklahnungshörn, which also serves as a ferry terminal to nearby islands. This dual function reveals how deeply the place remains tied to water and maritime life.
